Philip Johnson

1906 – 2005; born in Cleveland, Ohio

Philip Johnson

According to critics, Philip Johnson (curator, historian, and architect) redesigned the shape of America’s urban landscape and dominated city skylines for five decades. His fondness of minimalism, glass and steel, and function over ornamentation came to be known as the “International Style.” Among his many projects, he designed the Sculpture Garden at the Museum of Modern Art, the Interfaith Peace Chapel in north Texas (for the Cathedral of Hope, a congregation of the United Church of Christ that welcomes GLBT members) and, more locally, the Cleveland Playhouse. For his architectural contributions, Johnson was awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize for lifetime achievement and the Gold Medal of the American Institute of Architects.
